The Arlberg Drop
A cliff line above Lech that Mara had scouted for two seasons before the snowpack finally agreed with her.
We’d hiked this ridge twice before and turned back both times — once for wind, once because the cornice looked wrong. The third morning Mara didn’t ask what we thought, she just clicked in. The drop is about four metres onto a 45-degree face that hadn’t been skied since the last storm, which is exactly why she wanted it.
We shot from two positions: a fixed long lens on the opposite ridge for the drop itself, and a second shooter who’d booted up early to catch the exit at 120fps. The wind came back forty minutes after she landed, which is about the margin these mornings usually give you.
